A little more than a year ago I needed rehab for an old knee and ankle injury, and I wanted to get into better shape overall because my job as a massage therapist had become more demanding. Also, at the back of my mind, I knew my 35th high school class reunion was approaching, and well, I knew it would make me feel good to be able to present my best self to friends I hadn’t seen in years. I was so pleased to find personal trainer Sue Retzlaff and begin working with her. The program she designed for me helped me restore strength, tone, and balance to my quadriceps, rehab to the injured muscles of my left knee and ankle, and I began to see some lovely changes in my overall carriage. Stamina in my job has increased, and I now have energy for fun beyond the work week. My shoulders, which had been developing a rounding or kyphosis from massage work (all out-front arm activity and looking down at the client on the table), began to straighten up and fill out thanks to strength training for the upper back. I consulted Susan two more times to advance and fine-tune my workout, giving me more core strength, and tone for my arms and legs. Not only did I breeze through my class reunion with confidence (daring to wear a little black dress!), my healthcare professional tells me that I have increased bone density through perimenopause by 15% with the help of weight resistance training, diet, and supplementation! This is phenomenal. In addition, I no longer have knee pain with bending and gyration, and can dance to my heart’s content. Recently, while at a rock concert, a woman who I had never met came up to me to say she just had to tell me how much she admired and appreciated my tall and beautiful posture. Minutes later, while passing the concessions, I was tapped on the shoulder by a former male classmate from high school. “You look good; you look young!” he said, “What are you doing?” I told him I had hired a personal trainer, Sue Retzlaff, and got a whole lot more than I bargained for.
