Seth Swoboda

Throughout childhood, I was always moving -- albeit in my skinny and awkward body, which felt at a loss on the ball field or gym floor. I remember hating freshman year Phys Ed at my high school, as it felt more like a boot camp, dishing out punishment and humiliation for those of us who were less physically inclined. In fact, freshman year Phys Ed turned me off to fitness for the next four years. Fortunately, during my sophomore year of college I developed a love of running and an understanding that there are many ways in which to develop one's body. I began training as a dancer during my senior year of school while completing my B.S. in Health Care Administration, and at the age of 21 set out on a professional performing career (acting, singing, and dancing). For 16 years I performed in feature film, on television, off-Broadway and in regional theatres. As I began to re-tool for the end of my performing career as a dancer, I returned to school at Marymount Manhattan College in New York in 1998, where I became a Fitness Specialist: Older Adults. I became a Certified Personal Trainer in 1999 through the American Council on Exercise and in 2001 through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Through the American Council on Exercise, I became a Clinical Exercise Specialist in 2005, a Gold-Certified Advanced Health and Fitness Specialist in 2009, and a Gold-Certified Medical Exercise Specialist in 2015. In 2011, I was certified as a Cancer Exercise Trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine. In 2014, I was certified through the Functional Aging Institute as a Functional Aging Specialist.

My work with personal training clients focuses on providing clients a grounded education in safe and effective movement, proper posture and the use of breath, and the joyful essence of movement. I help clients re-examine their belief systems about the capabilities and perceived limitations of their bodies. Regardless of a client's past experience (or lack thereof) with movement and exercise, my goal is to help clients discover a true connection to their unique mind/body and to help them move mindfully, pursuing excellence over perfectionism. I approach my personal training work with focus and compassion, hoping to provide clients a safe space in which to explore their movement potential and reconnect with their body's longing to move, stretch, grow, thrive, and be at peace.

When I received a cancer diagnosis, with a prescription of some harsh chemotherapy, I was determined to find someone who would help me stay physically fit, and, in turn, psychologically positive. After receiving glowing recommendations from a friend, I engaged Seth Swoboda.
Seth exceeded all my expectations (I had never had a trainer) and motivated me to keep going, no matter how I felt. Before long, I accomplished that and more, but he also taught me more about posture, movement, balance, and strength building than I’d learned in all my years doing exercises on my own.
That was three years ago. I’m healthy now. Seth continues to work with me, and despite my tendency to make excuses for skipping part or all of my exercises, he forgives and gets me going all over again.
Seth is a attentive, reliable, kind, smart, interesting, tolerant, and, most important, a highly trained and informed fitness expert. I can’t imagine anyone who can match his qualities, and I am forever grateful.

I have been working with Seth for 13 years now ever since the birth of my second child. What originally began as a program to lose my baby fat and tone-up, has morphed into a permanent commitment to fitness and health. Seth arrives at every session on time and prepared and always with a smile on his face. Twice a week he guides me in an hour-long cross-training session incorporating aerobics and all the muscle groups. He has the ability to push you while at the same time being mindful of any aches, pains, or injuries. It amazes me that he is always able to come up with new exercises so that the workout never just becomes a routine.

I would refer Seth to anyone who is serious about working out and good health. He is truly an amazing trainer!

I have found the best people through referral by other excellent people. Seth is a great example. I found Seth in 2004 through the recommendation of a prior trainer who had gone onto other health-related businesses. Seth has visited my home weekly and on other occasions has arranged to meet me in Central Park or wherever we could most conveniently do our work. He is an exceptional listener and maintains meticulous records of important information. He encourages his clients to do the same, but only if they are so inclined. For that reason I have kept an exercise log for years. Even during periods when I am unable to see him, I send Seth a weekly exercise log, and he e-mails back with specific comments, always with encouragement. Seth doesn't just arrange a program for each client. He explains the purpose of each exercise and groupings of exercises, and so I have developed a body of knowledge that is useful to me even if I cannot see him. I feel capable and independent and can give myself a thorough work-out wherever I am because of the knowledge he has given me. He also understands the relationship between exercise, nutrition and emotional well-being. Through him I found an outstanding dietician who, with Seth, has helped me to lose weight and develop healthier eating habits, including through a recent period when I had major surgery. Seth comes with no pre-conceived notions of what a particular person must do. He is a caring human and talented professional who will do his best to improve the quality of a client's life. He is committed and highly motivating. He has been a tremendous help to me.

I have been working with Seth for over 2 years now. He had been highly recommended by someone who knew I was trying to lose weight and had never had a good experience with trainers in the past.
Because of Seth's positive approach and support, not to mention his entertaining personality and sense of humor, I have "showed up" for exercise on a regular basis during the past 2 years and I've lost 30 pounds. I cannot imagine that I would have been able to achieve this goal without him.

I knew Seth was different right from the start. He did not come with a rigid one-size-fits-all exercise plan and he didn't overwhelm me by insisting that I immediately exercise at some ideal level and duration per week. He did a thorough intake, listened carefully to me and paid attention to my goals. We started slowly, allowing for my fitness level and past injuries. He always encourages the baby steps, while pushing me to increase the intensity and duration of my exercise but not pushing me so hard that I give up or get injured in the process.

Seth has also been creative in helping me to maintain and/or increase exercise despite various obstacles. For example, he helped me develop exercise routines to use during my significant work-related travel, after foot surgery, and during my relocation to a different city.

Seth strikes the right balance for me. He is attuned to how I am feeling (both mentally and physically) and to my motivation. He employs a variety of techniques to motivate me in between sessions. He is truly a wonderful and caring trainer, who patiently nudges me toward my goals in spite of myself. I only wish I had contacted him much sooner!

After years of chronic back pain and visits to countless healthcare professionals, I regained strength and mobility that I thought was impossible to achieve. Seth developed a thoughtful and personalized program of stretching and strengthening exercises that had me in the best shape I've ever been in.
