Growing up in British Columbia, I had the opportunity to explore the city by foot, bike or public transportation. I remember playing around the back alley with my childhood friends, digging for insects in my friend’s garden, climbing frames of half built houses and our family’s weekly exploration and navigation around Vancouver’s rich Chinatown. I have always enjoyed exploring and independently figuring things out.
I was always inquisitive.
My first yoga class was at a large gym. It was on a Sunday morning that I had taken the instructor’s kickboxing class and decided to stay for her yoga class. I was intrigued, nonetheless. She was so good teaching two very different formats. I enjoyed the way she approached class with authenticity, humbleness and blissfulness every Sunday. It was a propitious beginning.
My interest grew. Since then, I have studied under some of the industry’s most knowledgeable and skillful teachers. From the spearhead of Yin Yoga, Bernie Clark to the parents of Yin Yoga, Paul and Suzee Grilley. Then to my Vinyasa teachers -- Noell Clark, Angie Poon, Clara Robert-Oss of Lila Vinyasa, Kathryn Budig of Aim True Yoga and Tiffany Cruikshank of Yoga Medicine. My restorative yoga training from Tianne Allan of Semperviva Yoga. My acupressure training from McKinnon Therapy School….the list goes on! I have so much gratitude to these teachers (as well as others not listed) and teachers that I will meet in the future. I have gained more clarity but with that, more questions!
I have been teaching group fitness and yoga since 2001. Fast forward, my journey has evolved to be a continuous inquiry on interoception, anatomy, embryology, movement, fitness and Chinese energy medicine. I co-facilitate the 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training and lead the Yin Yoga Teacher Training Program at The Yoga Company and Just Breathe Yoga {Rivermark}. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy face-planting in fun arm balances, falling out of tree pose and doing mostly the yin practice.
What can you expect in my classes?
If I could play the whole soundtrack of the movie “13 Going on 30,” I would.
Really though? You’ll find my inquisitive and playful nature in class. I like to empower my students to make their own choices. Education is key. Knowledge and understanding your own unique body and experience empowers you to live more mindfully and optimally. If you have questions, bring them! I love others who are inquisitive about their practice as well.
See you on your yoga mat!
