Working as an exercise specialist for 30 years, my roles have included teaching at universities & community colleges; consulting; providing continuing education for fitness professionals & providing management for health clubs & community outreach programs. I'm currently pursuing credentials as a Health/Wellness Coach, ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist & as a Certified Health Education Specialist. In the past, my work was focused on personal training & teaching. As a personal trainer, I created evidence based programs which emphasized injury prevention, spinal stability & balance. This included designing programs to reduce the risk of back pain & for fall prevention. The populations I've worked with include individuals who need pre- & post-rehab for orthopedic conditions (ie arthritis, carpal tunnel, back/knee/shoulder problems, hip/knee replacements), older adults & people with Osteoporosis & Scoliosis. My teaching experience includes being a Master Trainer to fitness professionals; certifying them for Resistaball®; as well as, being a lecturer & group exercise instructor in Kinesiology departments at universities & community colleges. The settings I've worked within include corporations, residential facilities, hospitals & senior centers. Other undertakings include having written & published articles, doing field research & giving lectures. I earned my M.S. & B.S. degrees at CSUF in Kinesiology & have an AA degree from Stephens College. For my master's thesis, I did a study with a program I designed for back pain prevention using methods for spinal stabilization with stability balls. The program addressed risk factors for back pain based on ergonomic principles. My research was published in peer-reviewed professional journals for ACSM & NSCA; which are are among the most respected organizations in the industry. I presented my findings at two ACSM meetings; this also entailed acceptance through peer-review. My work has been included in references for professional journals and presentations. On several occasions, I have been featured in Shape Magazine. The first time was in an article I wrote as a success story feature. Later, I was recruited as a mentor for a pilot program. I've been interviewed by Laura Brown on FREE FORUM, KNX FM in Los Angeles & for Jade Magazine. I also worked as an assistant for an aerobics video titled For Women Only. More recently, I completed an Oncology Patient Navigator Training Certificate from the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences (2017). In 2018, I also earned certifications from Wellcoaches (Certified Health & Wellness Coach) & Take Courage Coaching (Chronic Pain Management Coach, aka CPMC/Certified TCC Coach). In 2019, I passed the exam to become Board Certified through the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC).
