Learning Objectives

  • Define nonexercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) and other metabolic-related terms including total daily expenditure, resting metabolic rate, activity thermogenesis, thermogenesis and thermic effect of fuel.
  • Discuss the major results and implications of the 2005 pioneer study on NEAT.
  • Summarize the current research on number of steps per day recommended for optimal health, as well as how often (and how hard) it is beneficial for people to get up and move.
  • Complete a metabolic profile with appropriate interventions and various walking ideas for clients.
  • Describe the meaningful metabolic adaptations that occur in mitochondria from aerobic exercise and create some highly effective kilocalorie-burning workouts.
