Open your mind and open your studio doors to out-of-the-ordinary motivational techniques.

Indoor cycling participants at Virginia Commonwealth University recreational sports, in Richmond, get the opportunity to ride to rich cinematic memories in Spinning to Disney. While the instructor takes the class through a vivid visualization of an outdoor ride, the playlist features tunes from Disney movie soundtracks.

Police Academy gives members a chance to “improve your body, improve your life” with strength, cardiovascular and flexibility drills. The class, which is offered by Sportsplex in Orland Park, Illinois, encourages people to train hard while charting their blood pressure, cholesterol levels and more.

The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina simulates an outdoor hike in Treadmill Hiking. Participants gather in the “cardio center” as a group, and an instructor leads everyone on a “hike” that includes various changes in incline.

XLCR8 Strength is designed for “maximum results and power in performance, as well as metabolic and muscular composition change.” Members at the San Francisco Bay Club in California “enjoy a variety of functional, core strengthening and dynamic flexibility exercises” from this circuit training class.

Intensive Functional Training (IFT) Barbell, offered by the University of California, Los Angeles, recreation department, is for people who “want to work hard—plain and simple.” The class features multijoint compound movements that “challenge every muscle in your body.” The focus is on intensity, and the addition of barbells adds an element of strength and power to the workout.

Active older adults have a lot of options at the Osher Marin JCC in San Rafael, California. Among them is Bringing Into Balance. Recommended for people who are recovering from an injury, surgery or autoimmune disease, this class offers exercises that “improve balance while increasing strength and flexibility.”

Pumpalates, from the Hartley Drive YMCA in High Point, North Carolina, combines the functional movements of Pilates with traditional strength training.

Three is better than one at the Longmont Recreation Center in Longmont, Colorado. Power of 3 is a beginner class that starts with cardio, flows into a strength routine and ends with a final stretch that employs relaxation techniques. The focus is to introduce people to the benefits of fitness “while constantly evolving and changing” to keep people motivated. n
