Learning Objectives

  1. Identify appropriate loads for performing multi-joint exercises using light dumbbells in a fitness class setting.
  2. Compare and contrast four exercise science principles with respect to overload, exercise specificity and the law of diminished returns.
  3. Differentiate between the three planes of motion and identify exercises that occur in a primary, specific plane.
  4. Identify and address common faults in the performance of foundational moves including plank, push, pull, hinge, press and squat to maintain an organized, flowing exercise experience that is technically correct when using dumbbell training for large or small groups.
  5. Design dumbbell classes that include easy-to-implement movement patterns with a particular muscular focus that can be regressed or progressed for a variety of fitness levels.
  6. Coach, cue and communicate performance-based training dumbbell exercises using a direct, quick command format.
