Description

This course covers whether resistance training or cardiovascular exercise is better when training obese youth. In an attempt to get children off the couch, a number of personal trainers are now designing resistance training programs for preadolescent youth and teenagers to give them an option other than sports, games and cardiovascular activities. The research on the metabolic effects of resistance training versus aerobic exercise in obese youth is limited, however this article covers two recent studies supporting each side of the argument.

Learning Objectives

  2. Explain some of the metabolic outcomes of aerobic exercise and resistance training in obese youth.
  3. Provide some overall guidelines for developing a resistance training program for youth.
  4. Understand the research on interval training.
  5. Be able to design interval workouts to target specific metabolic energy systems.
