Modified Sit-up

by National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF)

Modified Sit-ups, sometimes called V sit-ups, or jack knife sit- ups, represent a quality exercise for trunk and hip force coupling. The modified sit-up variations provide good activities to increase hip trunk connectivity and spinal stabilization. The exercise takes advantage of hip and trunk synergy to create more forceful actions in the sagittal plane. The movement sequence encourages high to low force transfer and enhances dynamic balance and stability using a limited base of support. The exercise promotes the phasic action of the abdominals and acceleration of the hip flexors under a stable spine. Variations increase stability and coordination making this exercise useful in an integrated program for total body conditioning as well as conditioning programs that address athletic performance
