New Year Newness

New Year, New You.  Oh my goodness, all I can do is roll my eyes at that.  You don't have to wait until the new year to work on your health!!!  Good lord!!  And honestly, doesn't that message give people an excuse to wait?  

New year, new you...our cells regenerate every seven years; there is a five day life span of the cells that line our stomach; skin cells last seven days before they regenerate; our red blood cells regenerate after four months and our liver cells regenerate every five months.  There is newness in our bodies more often than gym marketers want you to think.  

You want to feel really new?  Meditate, practice yoga - clear your mind!  You can feel new every single day by clearing out the crap that runs through the mind.

New year, new you.  It's counterproductive.  Instead of inspiring - what happens by March if you never got to the gym or even signed up to get this new you?  Do you feel disappointed with yourself?  Feel less motivated?  It doesn't matter what day it is or what month it is.  Don't buy into this crap.  You decide when to start, how to start.  If you know you need a push and need a trainer, then by all means, go for it.  Maybe being yelled at by a trainer is not your style.  Maybe yoga is not your style either.  There are so many workout programs and yoga styles out there.  There's pilates too.  Do some research.  Find out what feels right, what calls you and go for it.

Motivate yourself.  Inspire yourself.  

Pregnant CPT

What's one to do with a diet and exercise regimen dictated by their personal body issue beliefs and she gets pregnant?  Rejoice!  What a relief!  This body is not just mine anymore and I have to look out for baby!  Granted, I am saying this at week 18 and have learned a lot since the news of pregnancy.  

Let me be honest, it wasn't that easy at first.  On one hand, instead of listening to the mind tell you how to eat, the body tells you how to eat.  Strict on carbs?  It doesn't matter.  Your body will want carbs (because is needs them!!) and there is no voice to object.  If your diet was scarce on carbs before becoming pregnant, chances are all the carbs you will take in will no do a thing to your weight.  

My story - I felt like I ate like a pig and I didn't gain a pound during my first trimester.  There's also the morning sickness that makes eating the last thing you want to do.  Prepregnancy, I ate arugula with veggies, nuts, olive oil, vegetarian mayo, seasonings and sometimes other toppings like olives, crushed bran flakes, etc.  In my first trimester, that was the last thing I wanted.  When morning sickness came, hard boiled eggs were my favorite food.  When it passed, I coudln't get enough, rice, mac n cheese, pasta, couscous, pizza,etc.  I definitely felt out of control and it was hard to get my new diet and mind to get along. 

There's also the changes that just happen, uninfluenced by diet.  Fat collecting in the hips, legs, low belly.  It's supposed to happen!  There's nothing you can do about it.  The body needs the energy with the developing of an itty bitty baby.

Once second trimester came and I felt great, I made working out and yoga a priority and I realized, hey, I don't cringe at the thought of salad and veggies, so I added them back in.  So I'm active and my diet is more balanced.  Do my arms look the same as they did before pregnancy?  No, and I really don't care.  There are more important things to focus on now and that is an understatement.

It all evens out.  It's hard to believe when you're in the initial changes, but it will come.  Another thing, it's not forever.  Once the baby is born, your body will go back to as it was, especially if you breastfeed.  Babies to come teach us what's important, teach us what matters.  This time is magical.  Enjoy it!
