Where in NEPA can I assume employment as an 'AFAA' Certified Personal Trainer?

Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) (AFAA)Personal Trainer

I have been recently certified through 'AFAA' as a CPT with no real 'work' experience but I've completed over 10+ years in the weightlifting/survival portion of this life...

Hello Edward,

I'm actually from Northeast, PA originally. Most gyms in NEPA set up a structure where you have to work there as an employee in addition to training. At least, this was the case the last I knew. I would suggest calling a handful of local gyms and see what their structure is. Tell them you have 10-plus years experience in the fitness industry, just recently got certified through AFAA and are looking to train. My advice is to stay independent. Often times, a gym will want you to sell your soul to them, and them only. Unless they are going to offer you a great cut and possibly clients from the get-go, resist this urge. It is more in your favor to have the latitude to bounce around freely from gym to gym, and house to house. You will definitely make the most income by training in home. This will depend of course on what equipment and background you have. If you need any more information, feel free to give me a shout back.

Have a great day,

K/Rail

Hi Edward. I agree with Kevin in that I think that now that you are certified, coupled with your previous experience, you should be marketable to most of the gyms in your area. I also agree with Kevin that remaining "independent" is probably the best way to go, but this is always a personal decision that you will have to weigh based on your own set of circumstances. Only you will truly know what will work best for you. There are definitely pluses and minuses in both situations (i.e. working as an employee for the gym, or as an independent contractor); consider and weigh them carefully before making your decision.

Congratulations on your new certification! I too hold a certification through AFAA.

I hope that this helps.
