What is your process for hiring personal trainers as independent contractors? requirements etc.

Personal TrainingBusiness: Personal TrainingHiringCompensationIndependent Contractor

What are your requirements other than proof of insurance/certifications? As a city, we currently hire referees for various sports as ICs, but the process is very simple and doesn't include much else above and beyond a background check. Do you ask for resumes, past job history, testimonials, a mock training session etc. when you hire your trainers? Any insights would be much appreciated!

Hi Kelly,
When I was a Personal Training Coordinator the following are what I required:

1. Resume
2. Reference
3. Copies of Current Certification(s)
4. Proof of Liability Insurance
5. Conduct a 1-on-1 Consultation (with myself or another trainer)
6. Conduct a 1-on-1 Assessment/Workout (with myself or another trainer)

I would also discuss with the potential trainer what will be expected of them (especially if they've never been a contractor vs employee), as some Personal Trainers having never contracted, do not truly know there is/can be a big difference.

Good luck and much success!

Lisa

Hi Kelly. I hire IC's on an 'as-needed' basis when I need a specialty service provider. I definitely make it a point to see them in action, whether that's going to a place where they are training/teaching as an observer, or having them provide a one-on-one training with me. It's great that they have all of the necessary certifications and paperwork, but the truth is if they cannot teach or relate to their audience, those certifications aren't worth the paper they're written on. Our industry is a very personal one and you need personable people working with your clients to ensure retention and growth.

Aside from that, 'yes,' copy of certifications, copy of insurance (including adding me as Additional Insured), signed copy of my Independent Contractor Agreement, and definitely Client References.

I hope that this helps.
