Just wanted to bring out that the progression of osteopenia can be stopped. However, once one has osteoporosis, there is no turning back.
Hi Ali,
the loss of bone mineral density is on a grading scale, called T-score.
A T-score of -1 to 0 and above is considered normal bone density.
A T-score between -1 and -2.5 is diagnosed as osteopenia.
A score of -2.5 or below is diagnosed as osteoporosis.

While we're on the subject of osteoporosis - Ali, are you familiar with a machine called the GE Lunar DXA? Or how about an iDXA (basically a newer model)?
Both machines are typically used when someone wants a precise measure of their body composition. However, they can both also be used for bone density testing if you're interested in knowing what your "T-score" is (awesome info, Karin!).
Here are a few links for more information about the machines from a research lab I worked in:
- http://www.edb.utexas.edu/fit/bodycompfit.php
Let me know if the links raise any additional questions and I'd be happy to help.

Loss of bone mineral density may be associated with arthritis. So a progressive LBD may be seen as a specific joint disease or debility. See NIH arthritis research.
