I want to offer online personal training service. How can I get clients and promote this kind of personal training?

BusinessBusiness: Personal TrainingPersonal TrainingOnline Training

I am looking for extra income in the fitness industry and besides training people one on one I am planning on offering my service online.
How can I start my online personal training business, how to get clients, how can I promote my business?

I have done it and I think a key to it is to constantly connect and communicate with your clients. Use phone, email and also software to stay connected. Software was actually one of the things that helped me most with my clients because you can both look at the progress and workouts and better manage it all on one site. Like others have said in-person is much better but online training is better than no training. One Idea is to supplement the online training with a few in person sessions per month. Not always possible but it really would be helpful.

Edit: Since some have asked about the tools I used, http://www.fitsw.com/ was the specific software I used the most. There are many other options as well but this one was free and worked well. This type of software really helped improved my success and client retention. My client's loved being able to track their weights and exercises online with me. The tool provided a suite of online tools like workout tracking & organizing, goal/body measurement progress tracking (in very nice easy to read graphs), diet plan creation, allowed me to provide demo videos for my clients and included a scheduling system.

First, you need to make sure that you have a quality product to offer. Training online is a lot of work if its done properly. I train very few clients online and the ones I do, I have worked with in person in the past. Perhaps online wellness coaching would be more appropriate. Do it for the clients, not the extra income.

I would have to agree with Stephen and Susan. Online or virtual training can be a very intense experience for both yourself and potential clients. If you want to " get your feet wet" in the format you can try the Sharecare virtual coaching program or something similar. Or go for the gusto and pursue a fully accredited coaching certification like a Wellness or Integral Coach and first develop your coaching skills. Then, having some real coaching experience under your belt - transition to an online format when you feel ready. Nothing will ever beat the personal touch benefit of face to face coaching or training but virtual methods can be a great supplement to current client programs. Being a professional dancer as well as a coach and trainer I use Facebook and Skype to "train" my current clients when I or they are on travel. The possibility exists, but like Susan asked, you just have to decide what depth of coaching you want to offer and why?

LaTahsa's response gives you the most specific info. Susan and Stephan pose some important questions. I don't know that there is a database that directly answers your specific question. IDEA could be a good resource.

After many years in the industry I suggest that you speak with your legal counsel to determine your potential exposure from offering your personal training expertise online.

Take care, good luck.

I agree with Stephen that online 'wellness coaching' may be what you're interested in here. With online personal training, the key is COMMUNICATION. The client that you're communicating with must be CLEAR on the exercise prescription that you're giving them so that they perform it correctly, get results, and more importantly don't get injured. It's for those reasons that, like Stephen, I usually reserve this type of training for a client that I've already been working with in-person, and who understands my methods and terminology. Because exercise performance and technique is so very 'technical,' it can be difficult. Whereas online or telephone wellness consultations may not have the same level of technical components to it, and therefore may lend itself better to this type of off-site arrangement.

Definitely something worth thinking about. I wish you success and good luck whichever way you decide to go.

Hello Silvia,
I have found this is a tough edeavor and a higher percentage of people like the human touch ie: one on one/group training to stay motivated.
If you have started your online business...what are your results?

Sincerely,
Michael

Online training can be very challenging. It takes lots of time to make a quality product and even more time getting people to the site. There are lots of different ways to promote your website, online advertising, advertising around town, etc... I feel if you want people to come to your site you need to have something more to offer than just online personal training. Free videos, blogs, etc... can be very useful for bringing people in and at least getting noticed.
It took me quite awhile to create www.Biomechanicallyfit.com, my online personal training website and even more establishing it.

I got certified about a year ago and have been training for about 6 months but was making $450 per month so I had to work at another job. I accidentally stumbled onto this guy’s site at www.TheSixFigureTrainer.com and it was the best accident.

The guy that runs it is Stu and I signed up for one of his classes. In 2 weeks I got a new client who is paying me $350 a month and now I have gotten 3 more clients each paying me about $400 a month. I would recommend the site. There are a lot of great resources and tools and tips.

Training online is a big part of my business. I decided to skip the fancy software and got a website with a members only area for each client. I basically upload videos from my Youtube channel into each clients page along with nutrition advice. I have used this to supplement my one on one clients which allows me to charge more. There are a lot of options for websites, but www.trainertry.com has what you need built in and it's far less expensive than hosting your own site or using the overpriced software. Good luck!

I am completely against this trend of online training. And let's set the record straight, stop calling it online "personal" training. There is nothing personal about it. The client is miles away and the trainer would be absolutely useless in the event of an emergency. Just because the incidence of emergency situations occuring is low, doesn't mean that it is ok to risk a client's welfare to make money.

Online training and exercise videos have not only been shown to be a huge waste of the consumer's money, these things are dangerous. It is just a business for profit, not a true service to the public.
