Hi Natalie,
I was not aware of this. Thanks for the information. Here is a link to the AARP information which states that people with a BMI over 30 can get counselling http://www.aarp.org/health/medicare-insurance/info-03-2012/medicare-weig.... This has to be done in the primary care setting and cannot be outsourced. Here is an excerpt from the text:
"The counseling must be provided by a primary care doctor, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist or physician assistant. Any of them can refer you to other facilities or specialists such as nutritionists, but you’ll have to pay for those. Medicare will cover only sessions that take place in a primary care setting."

This is good information. We all have had students/clients who might benefit from such counseling. And while I am always careful of using the word 'obesity' or of cheerfully suggesting to someone they would need this service (trying to build trust, and allowing people to initiate questions of ways to create health and wellness in their life for their specific needs), once that topic is broached it is good to have specific resources to which one can refer someone.
Karin's addition is especially important.... One would not be able to obtain reimbursement for work with a personal trainer or nutritionist or trainer with a nutrition certificate , but it does give us an opportunity to build mutuality with local programs that are eligible.

Thank you for your response, Ariadne. Clients who do a consultation have opened the door of communication when this news may be of help. Yes, building mutuality with other programs can be beneficial. Take care, Natalie.
